< !-- ADS -->The reason was that there cannot be a CNAME record for a domain if there already is any other kind of record (A, NS or MX) for the same domain according to RFC1912 2.4 and RFC2181 10.3. We unfortunately did not know this and our control panel for DNS settings happily allowed it, and it silently failed when propagating our changes to the DNS servers rather than giving an errror message. Couple this with a very slow support team from the DNS provider, and that's the reason for our 2 day downtime in our subdomains.
